'We have more important problems than finding Madeleine', says top Portuguese policeman

Police in Portugal have "bigger problems" than finding Madeleine McCann, the leader of the country's rank and file officers said yesterday. (Daily Mail 7th February 2008)

Carlos Anjos spoke out as the head of Policia Judiciaria faced growing calls to step down from his job after admitting his officers had rushed the decision to name her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, as suspects

His comments came after national director of the PJ, Alipio Ribeiro, said in an interview that the authorities had acted "hastily" in making the McCanns formal suspects in their daughter's disappearance.

Mr Anjos said: "We heard the director's explanations and we are going to continue to try to clear things up duly. The subject should be discussed internally and not in the newspapers. Everybody has a right to speak, and sometimes not to express themselves well. There are bigger problems in the PJ than the Maddie case, with all the respect it deserves."
